Explain the limits of confidentiality — including limits specific to online platforms — before or during the first online meeting, and document that conversation. Ensure collection, use and storage of client information complies with applicable privacy legislation. Ensure client information is stored in a jurisdiction whose privacy laws are consistent with Ontario’s or, where applicable, Canada’s. Verify client identity where impersonation is possible, establish a discreet signal so a client can convey they are not alone or not safe, and develop a safety plan including emergency contact permission.
